New Ways to Find Lost Pets Unveiled by Animal Care & Control

Adoptable and Lost/Found Pet Searches Improved on Muni.org

Anchorage Animal Care and Control Center (AACCC) is excited to announced their new online features for the Adoptable and Lost/Found Pet pages on www.muni.org/animal. These enhancements have been integrated into the current website to better serve the public, the shelter and ultimately, the animals.

Sign up to automatically receive emails on animals entering the shelter!

One of the most common inquiries received at AACCC are requests from community members to be contacted when specific breeds that match their missing pet enter the shelter as strays, or when specific breeds they wish to adopt become available. Through the new integration between Muni.org and the AACCC database system, community members can sign up to automatically receive emails on animals they have lost, animals they have found or animals that they wish to adopt. They can restrict their selection based on breed, age, gender and even color.

Anchorage Animal Care and Control Center (AACCC) is announcing its annual Poster Dog Contest. The winning dog(s) will be the next AACCC poster dog(s) for the dog licensing campaign in 2015. This contest is open to any licensed dogs, and their people, currently living in the Municipality of Anchorage. The winning dog’s family will receive a free photo session for their dog with local pet photographer David Jensen at Alaska Pet-ography!

Anyone interested in participating must email a photo of their dog WEARING A CURRENT MOA DOG LICENSE TAG to taylorbd@muni.org and include their name, address, and telephone number, the dog’s name, age, breed, and a short story about why their dog should be chosen as Poster Dog (500 words or less). Entries with missing information will not be considered.

Any pictures submitted must be non-copyrighted, non-published work. Only pictures of dogs may be submitted. There is no limit to the number of dogs in each picture. A minimum of one photo and a maximum of four photos should be submitted per dog. Maximum photo size is 1MB.

All pictures must be received by Friday, August 29, 2014, to be considered. For full contest rules and more information, please contact Brooke at 343-8138 or taylorbd@muni.org. For more information on dog licensing, go to http://www.muni.org/animal.

A municipal license is required for all dogs over the age of four months in the Municipality of Anchorage. Unfortunately, only an estimated 20% of dogs are licensed in the municipality.

In 2013, only 39% of stray animals brought to AACCC were claimed by their owners. Many of the thousands of stray or lost pets that come to AACCC clearly come from homes where they are cared for, trained, and loved. Sadly, most arrive because they have no identification and no way to return them to their owner. Identification and licensing go hand in hand with the protection of our pets. A municipal license ensures that pets are returned to their owners if they are lost and will receive medical care if it’s found injured. It also allows AACCC to keep the animal safely with us for a longer period of time before putting that pet up for adoption.

Independence Day Weekend Reminder: Fireworks and Pets Don’t Mix

As we approach the holiday weekend, please remember that July 4th celebrations can be a potentially dangerous and frightening time for pets. While fireworks are not allowed within the Municipality of Anchorage, many people travel with their pets to see family, camp, and enjoy the holiday. Help ensure the health and safety of your pet by following these tips:

  • Keep your pet in a SECURE and quiet setting, like your home (make sure all windows and doors are closed);
  • Turning on a television or radio can mask the noise of fireworks, helping keep your pet calm;
  • Be certain your pet has a current MOA dog license, a current identification tag, and its rabies tag securely fastened to its collar;
  • In the unfortunate event that your pet does escape, check with the Anchorage Animal Care and Control Center ASAP; and
  • While the Center can be reached by phone at 343-8122, it is always best to come in person to look for your dog or cat every 2-3 days, as no one can identify your animal better than you.

AACCC will be closed to the public on Friday, July 4. We will reopen for our regular hours on Saturday, July 5. AACCC normal business hours are Monday-Friday, 11:00am-7:00pm and Saturday-Sunday, 10:00am-6:00pm. Please direct further questions to AACCC at 343-8122 or access information on our website, www.muni.org/animal.

2014 World Spay Day

AACCC and our partner, Friends of Pets – Anchorage, will participate in World Spay Day, an inte…rnational campaign of The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International, to promote the life-saving benefits of spay and neuter, by off-setting the cost of spay and neuter fees for those adopting animals from the shelter for a limited time.

From Valentine’s Day (February 14) until World Spay Day (February 25), every cat and pit bull mix dog adopted from the AACCC, up to 50 animals, will received a free spay or neuter provided by Friends of Pets. Cats adopted will have their $80 spay or neuter surgery done at the shelter, with the cost covered by Friends of Pets. Community members adopting pit bull mix dogs will be given a spay/neuter coupon from Friends of Pets, which will cover the entire spay or neuter fee if done at the Alaska SPCA Clinic or defray $85 of the cost of spay or neuter at their chosen veterinary clinic. If your pet is already spayed or neutered and you still want to honor Spay Day, you can help by sponsoring the spay or neuter of at least one animal they know—a friend or family member’s—in honor of the 20th Anniversary of Spay Day this year. You can also donate to groups that assist owners locally with spay/neuter, such as Friends of Pets and Alaska SPCA.
